2007 Vietti “Arneis” Arneis (the grape) was almost extinct in the 1960’s, replaced in Piedmonte by the workhorse Cortese grape (a lot easier to grow) but Alfredo Curado (owner of Vietti) began what was to be his personal mission to revive appreciation of this ancient, heirloom grape. It’s a good thing he did because it is one of the most delicious whites in the world (preferably fresh like this one). Hints of mineral mingle with apple and wildflower in the aromatics. The first sip is like biting into a ripe pear with secondary ripe golden-delicious apple flavors cascading across your palate. This wine brings so much joy I frankly have to wonder why so many wines rely on heavy handed oak as their primary flavor. I would rate this wine higher but I think 92 points is about as high as I go on whites! Great as a sipper and with all manner of rice and seafood dishes.
